In mid-December 2002, The Paper Menu creator, Marie Katz,
flipped through her gift list. She knew she couldn’t leave anyone
out, couldn’t spend a fortune, and certainly couldn’t cook
– unless “microwave 3 minutes” was part of the recipe.
Her career as an art director was her only hope. While looking down
at some store bought calling cards, Marie thought to herself, “I
can do better than this and package them as gifts.”
She did. The holiday cards were a hit. The word quickly spread throughout
the oak-trailed roads of Mobile, Alabama – along with all the
other good Southern gossip. Birthdays, weddings, graduations, holidays
and Mardi Gras parties all needed invitations, note cards and calling
cards.
The Paper Menu sells through albums and currently has three– the
Everyday, Signature and Holiday albums. The company currently has
over 500 designs, with plans to debut personalized gift wrap, framed
8" calling cards and personalized onesies and tees at the
2007 National Stationery Show.
One aspect that sets The Paper Menu apart from other stationery companies
is it’s flexibility. All album orders are custom printed, giving
the customer the ability to change colors, add photos, etc. For example,
the Bubbles Birth Announcement has been printed many times as a Save
the Date, using the bride’s colors.
Marie resides in Mobile with her husband, Julian, their
three-year-old son, Bennett and five-month-old Frances.
